We may have reached the height of UK summer, but here at DCM we’re already looking ahead to 2017. It seems that every year recently has seen an extraordinary number of blockbusters but next year is set to up the ante even further.
While we don’t want you to lose sight of the fact that Girl on the Train, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are still yet to be released in 2016, we’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest films we expect to be dominating conversations and filling cinemas throughout 2017.
The excitement gets going early, as there’s a sequel to one of the greatest British films of all time (not just our words, the BFI’s too), the red hot, record-breaking sensation from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the steamy sequel to the biggest 18-cert film of all time, and a solo animated film that combines the forces of LEGO and DC Comics. And that’s just January and February.
The rest of the year sees Disney likely to continue its unbelievable hot streak, with a new live-action Beauty and the Beast, which had a record-breaking trailer launch, amassing a whopping 91.8m views in 24 hours.
The company also has the hugely anticipated sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy planned, a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film in store and Pixar again releases two films, one of which, Coco, is another potentially classic original animation, this time from the director of Toy Story 3.
Warner Bros is all set for another great year too, with the continuation of its DC Comics slate in Wonder Woman and Justice League, but most excitingly Christopher Nolan is back in the summer with a brand new original title.
Dunkirk is about the miraculous evacuation of allied soldiers during the Second World War, and with a cast that includes Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance, it’s a good shout for 2017’s standout blockbuster.
Other high profile sequels include Fast 8, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Pitch Perfect 3 and War for the Planet of the Apes, the latter reuniting the team behind the excellent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
However, the most exciting sequels all have links with decades ago. Ridley Scott once again returns to the Alien universe, with Alien: Covenant, which will reveal what happened after the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Then another Scott sci-fi classic, Blade Runner, gets a long-awaited sequel. It’s no cynical cash-in, either, one of Hollywood’s best directors, Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners), is the man in charge and Harrison Ford is back.
Finally, the biggest film of the year is likely to be another contender for the biggest film of all time, Star Wars: Episode VIII is again going to dominate Christmas and conclude another stunning year for the big screen.
