The world premiere of Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid took place yesterday in Hollywood. Celebs walked the blue carpet as a live steel pan drum band played ‘Under The Sea’.

Directed by Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns), the film stars Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula the sea witch.

Critics who were lucky enough to experience the world premiere took to social media to praise the latest live action remake from Disney, particularly Halle Bailey’s performance.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid will be showing in UK cinemas from Friday 26 May. There’s still a chance to be involved, with the Gold and Silver spots still available. Reach out to your DCM contact today to find out more.

First reactions:

“Disney’s #TheLittleMermaid is definitely one of the better live-action adaptions” Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes’ Erik Davis tweeted. “Halle Bailey pours incredible emotion into Ariel and I got chills watching her, while Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula and Daveed Diggs’ Sebastian steal scenes all day.”

Next Best Picture and Hollywood Critics Association’s Zoë Rose Bryant shared her thoughts: “#TheLittleMermaid is a live-action remake that retains the heart and soul of the story we know and love, and it’s elevated even further by a note-perfect star-making performance from Halle Bailey - she was born to be on the big screen, & she’s why this new take is worth watching.”

Kathia Woods from the African-American Film Critics Association tweeted:#TheLittleMermaid is a tribute to all little girls to dream big. Halle Bailey is sheer magic and Daveed Diggs a delight as Sebastian.”

“Disney’s live-action is magical, emotional and enchanting” shared Variety Senior Artisans Editor Jazz Tangcay. “Rob Marshall just directed Disney’s best ever live action film. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken’s beautiful music shines. Halle Bailey is absolutely extraordinary! and Melissa McCarthy is a bad-ass Ursula.”

Even Jodi Benson, the original voice of Princess Ariel, praised Halle Bailey’s portrayal of the young mermaid princess: “I love that she has a purity of heart and a pure spirit, and you can see that vulnerability and that child-like (manner) and that bravery and courage coming through, and it’s beautiful.”
