The 2nd of September is a special date for the Plaza Community Cinema in Liverpool, not just because it marks the 75th anniversary of the cinema but because the only reason the site still stands today is because of the efforts of local volunteers.
The cinema is steeped in history and even opened and closed on its very first night, due to the outbreak of WW2.
Sadly 17 years ago, Apollo Leisure, who owned the building, wanted to sell the building for redevelopment and were looking to either have the building demolished or sell it onto the Department of Social Security. Luckily a 12 year boy who went to a local school started a petition to save the cinema and got 10,000 signatures to save the buidling. The cinema became the Plaza Community Cinema and has since been run by volunteers and only last year welcomed its 100,000 customer.
We at DCM applaud the efforts of the volunteers in fighting for and maintaining this cornerstone of the local community and wish it and its staff all the best for the future.
