The Riverside Theatre in Woodbridge has celebrated its 100th year anniversary.

The Theatre was originally purpose-built as a cinema and opened on 25 September 1915. Built on a the site of a coal yard, it was first completed as 'The Electric Palace' showing silent movies to 550 punters at a time - accompanied by a live pianist. After the wars, the cinema was renamed 'The Woodbridge Cinema' which, against all odds, thrived as an independent cinema and theatre until being transformed in 1984 to the stunning Riverside Theatre we know today.

The Riverside is one of the few surviving pioneering cinemas created in the mid 1910s that were made possible by the sudden availability of electricity. The very first 'moving images' were displayed at the cinema.

The Theatre is staging some fantastic events throughout September to celebrate it Centenary. To see what’s on visit www.theriverside.co.uk.
