The Hangover Part II opened to an amazing weekend gross of £8.4m, the second best opening of 2011 to date, just short of Pirates 4 £8.6m debut last weekend. It smashed the opening weekend of the first Hangover which took in £2.7m excluding previews in 48 fewer locations. Not only is it the biggest three-day opening for a 15-rated comedy of all time, it’s the second biggest opening ever for a 15-rated film.
Pirates dropped to second place with a strong box office to date at £19.7m, with this week's school half-term holiday still to come. Also released over the weekend was the sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, with a well rounded three day gross of £1.1m.
Overall the top 15 films this weekend grossed a combined £18.5m (inc. previews), that's +31% up on the same weekend last year when Sex and the City 2 opened.
It was Memorial Day weekend in the US, with The Hangover Part II delivering extremely strong opening results repeating its UK success. Grossing an estimated $135m in its first five days, its audience was 51% female (first Hangover was 52% male) and 54% aged under 25.
With such worldwide success so far there is already mentions of a third Hangover (set in Amsterdam?) to round off the series. But will they stop there?...
