Last Thursday we officially said goodbye to the Cornerhouse Cinema and hello to HOME, Manchester, with hundreds of people from around the country flocking to the official opening of Manchester’s new arts centre.

Patron Danny Boyle led the celebrations in the opening of the new £25m arts complex, which has been five years in the making. The Hollywood director helped launch the funfair themed Opening Ceremony of the Bank Holiday weekend celebration of Manchester’s new centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film. The opening weekend celebrations saw world premieres of theatre, visual arts and film projects which took place over the 5 days.

The centre, which was designed by Dutch architects Mecanoo, was formed from the merger of two Manchester’s best loved cultural organisations, Cornerhouse and the Library. The centre includes a 450-seat theatre; a 150-seat flexible theatre space; a 500 sq metre, four metre-high flexible gallery space, five cinema screens; digital production and broadcast facilities.

DCM’s Steve Davis was in attendance and here’s what he had to say:

“After spending a few days on the road it really did feel like I was HOME when I got to Manchester on Thursday night. I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of this amazing site. It really does have it all. Not only were there five amazing screens, but a gallery, restaurant, theatre and bar, that were all packed to the rafters.

I also felt very privileged to attend the first exhibition at the cinema. The screening was of the profoundly moving ‘The Salt of the Earth’ - the moving story that follows the 40 year career of Sabastiao Salgado as he travels the world documenting major events in our global history.

If you are ever in Manchester do pop in and see the site. You won’t be disappointed.”
