Comic Con 2016 unfolded with the usual bout of cosplay and movie-based tomfoolery at the San Diego Convention Center last week including impressive costumes inspired by soon to be released titles as well as some golden oldies for good measure.

The studios came with plenty of visual pleasers too in the form of epic new trailer footage for films to be released in the second half of 2016 and well into next year. Here’s a round-up of DCM’s top picks from what was shown in California.

The LEGO Batman Movie

The LEGO Movie was the biggest film of 2014, and while it was packed with great characters, Will Arnett’s Batman still managed to stand out. He gets his own film in 2017 and it looks set to be another big box office hit. Throw his trusty sidekick, Robin, into the mix and you have one of next year’s standout family films.

Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch comes to the fore as Marvel’s latest actor to be given the superhero treatment in the form of Doctor Strange. This latest trailer opens up the movie’s universe to viewers with mind-bending footage and delves deeper into the story. ‘Inception meets Batman Begins’ has been mentioned and as you’ll see from the trailer, it’s a pretty good description.

Wonder Woman/Justice League

We’ve cheated here by putting two films together, but we can’t wait for Wonder Woman and this new footage makes us even more excited about seeing Gal Gadot in her own movie as Diana Prince. Throw in a Ben Affleck-fronted Justice League trailer, including many of DC Comics’ biggest characters and next year should be another big one for the rivals to Marvel.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Eddie Redmayne returns in J.K Rowling’s latest from the wizarding world as Newt Scamander, a creature smuggler who manages to sneak his herd of strange beings into America, the land of opportunity. The trailer also stars Colin Farrell and reveals more about the chaos we should expect when the film is unleashed in cinemas in November.

Blair Witch

Comic Con wouldn’t be Comic Con without a few surprises and perhaps the most notable this time around was an announcement of a new Blair Witch movie in the latter part of 2016. It’s been on the schedule for a few months under the name The Woods, but its true identity has now been revealed. The brother of original cast member, Heather, picks up where the last left off as he leads a group into the woods to try to get to the bottom of her disappearance. It looks terrifying and you can see it, if you’ve got the stomach for it, in September.
