Last week CinemaCon, the annual gathering of movie theatre owners from around the world, took place in Last Vegas and attendees were treated to the first-look at certain films making up the robust film slate we have ahead for the rest of 2022 and into 2023.
There was the first ever look at James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, as well as the very first public screening of the long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick. Both titles left big impressions.
In a video message from New Zealand, Cameron stated “We set out to push the limits of what cinema can do”. The teaser trailer is being released this week in cinemas ahead of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. Read more about the footage preview via The Hollywood Report here.
The hottest moment of CinemaCon
Top Gun: Maverick has been given huge praise from crowds of cinema exhibitors and journalists following its premiere at CinemaCon, being called the “best film of the year”.
Top movie journalists from publications such as The Wrap, Collider, Fandango and Los Angeles Magazine have shared their reactions on social media, describing the film as "the perfect blockbuster", "the real deal", "a profound cinematic experience" and that Top Gun: Maverick is "the kind of movie you want to see on the biggest screen possible"!
The Wrap’s editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman wrote: “Just had the joyous experience of watching Top Gun: Maverick at #CinemaCon. Old School moviemaking in the best possible sense – Tom Cruise, I tip my hat. You put the youngest stars to shame. What a ride.”
Total Film’s Jamie Graham tweeted: “Not sure it’s possible to make a more perfect sequel than Top Gun: Maverick. If you like the original, this is everything you’ve waited 36 years for, balancing nostalgic call-backs with a fresh, dynamic plot and STUNNING aerial photography. Totes emosh, too.”
As cinema attendance shows a positive revival throughout 2022 so far, a high turnout is expected for the return of Top Gun, particularly for male and ABC1 audiences: the film is forecast to deliver 22 16-34 Men and 15 ABC1 Men TVRs. It is expected to be one of the most spectacular films of the year, and one that simply has to be experienced in cinema.
Top Gun: Maverick lands in UK cinemas on 25 May and there’s still a chance for brands to get involved too, with the Gold and Bronze spots still available.
