Disney ruled the box office this week as their big seasonal animation, Frozen opened with a very impressive £4.7m. That’s the second highest Friday to Sunday opening of the year for an animated film, behind Despicable Me 2 (£10m). Wreck-It Ralph opened with £4.5m in February and The Croods opened with £3.5m in March: both of those titles managed to cross £24m, so hopes are high for the rest of Frozen’s run. Over 39.1% of Frozen’s total came from 3D presentations, which is the highest percentage for a family animation since Wreck-It Ralph in February.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire fell 51% to £2.7m, for a cume of £26.4m and has now overtaken the first Hunger Games’ £24m final total. It is now placed seventh on the top 10 biggest films of 2013 and should climb a couple of places higher before the end of its run.

At some point over the weekend, Catching Fire overtook Gravity, which grossed a further £1.1m for a cume of £24.6m. That places it tenth on the list of 2013’s biggest films.

Disney charmer, Saving Mr. Banks had the strongest hold of the top 15, falling 31% to £548k and a cume of £2m. It is still on a large number of screens so Disney will be hoping it continues to do well as we approach Christmas.

The second highest new entry was Homefront, opening in fifth with £440k. 2013 hasn’t been a vintage year for Jason Statham and this opening was between March’s Parker (£569k) and June’s Hummingbird (£207k).

One other notable occurrence over the last week is brilliant comedy, Philomena, crossing the £10m mark, which is a terrific performance.

Overall the box office was down 6% from last weekend but up 40% from the same weekend last year.

In the US, like in the UK, Frozen made the top spot, falling 53% to $31.6m. That may sound like a big drop but is actually the highest post-Thanksgiving weekend gross ever. The Disney animation has now grossed $134.3m and should reach $250m by the end of its run. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire had a big drop this weekend, tumbling 64% to $27m and it now has a cume of $336.7m. Thriller, Out of the Furnace debuted in third with $5.3m. The audience was 60% male, and 77% were over the age of 25.

In fourth spot, Thor: The Dark World fell 57% to $4.7m and has a cume of $193.6m. The top five was completed by Delivery Man, which had a decent hold, grossing £3.8m for a cume of $24.8m.
