Thor: The Dark World dealt a hammer blow to all other contenders this weekend, comfortably taking the top spot. The Marvel sequel debuted with a god-like £8.7m, which includes £3.1m from Wednesday and Thursday previews. The £5.6m Friday to Sunday total is the seventh highest of the year, ahead of The Hangover Part III (£4.9m) and behind Star Trek Into Darkness (£6.9m).

The first Thor opened with £5.4m (including £2.3m from previews) in 2011 and finished on £14m, so Thor: The Dark World is already well over half way to overhauling that total. Over 50% of Thor: The Dark World’s gross was from 3D presentations.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 had an incredibly strong hold, falling a measly 2% once previews are removed to £2.1m and a cume of £8.9m. The first Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs finished on £6.6m so the sequel has already far outperformed the original. With no major family film released until Free Birds on 29 November, Cloudy 2 should continue to do well at weekends. Captain Phillips fell one place to third with £1.6m and a strong cume of £11.4m.

After Thor: The Dark World, the highest new entry was terrific Judi Dench comedy, Philomena, in fourth place with £1.5m (including £56k from previews). Veteran British director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen and Mrs. Henderson Presents) has had a long and distinguished career and this was his most successful opening ever, beating The Queen’s £856k. The Queen finished on £9.4m, so Philomena has some way to go yet.

Turbo completed the top five increasing 2% from last weekend to £1.4m and a cume of £9.7m.

Overall the box office was down 22% from the same weekend last year and up 38% from last weekend.

In the US, a week after its UK release, Ender's Game took the top spot with a stellar $28m. In comparison to 2013’s other sci-fi titles, that’s better than After Earth ($27.5m) and lower than Elysium, Pacific Rim and Oblivion. The movie's audience was 58% male and 54% over the age of 25.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa dropped to second with $20.5m and after 10 days has grossed $62.1m. Geriatric comedy, Last Vegas opened in third place with $16.5m and unsurprisingly, the audience was 83% over 25 but less surprisingly it was also 53% female. Free Birds opened in fourth with $16.2m and in fifth, Gravity fell 35% to $13.1m and to date has grossed $219.2m.
