The Weekend Round-up
Captain America: The Winter Soldier climbed back to the top of the box office after adding £1.8m, giving the Marvel title a cume of £14.6m. Thor: The Dark World’s final total of £20.1m may be out of reach but it’s still a strong performance. Noah moved up one spot to second, with £1.6m for a cume of £5.9m. That’s a decent hold and with Easter this week, it may get a seasonal boost.
Rio 2 dropped to third, only £32k behind Noah, also on £1.6m and to date has grossed £6.8m. It’s exactly half way to the first Rio’s final total of £13.6m and with no family competition until Tarzan on 2 May, it will be looking to get close to that total. Divergent dropped to fourth, falling 43% to £1m. After ten days the young adult adaptation has a cume of £4m, which is comfortably more than The Host, Beautiful Creatures, Warm Bodies and Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
Three new entries came in at five, seven, and eight in The Quiet Ones, Calvary and The Raid 2. The Quiet Ones opened with £681k, which includes £113k from previews. Calvary opened with £571k (including £7k from previews) but €359 of that total is from the Republic of Ireland, which would make it the third highest debut of the year there. The Raid 2’s debut of £454k included £47k from previews and is a slight improvement on the first film’s £418k debut, which included £28k from previews.
On a weekend of great weather, the box office was down 29% from the last weekend and down 21% from the same weekend last year when Tom Cruise sci-fi Oblivion went on general release.
Next Weekend
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into cinemas on Wednesday and will no doubt have a big opening weekend. Transcendence previews next Saturday and Sunday. Also in cinemas are some smaller titles, The Love Punch, Locke and We Are The Best, which will all be hoping to attract an older audience.
The Buzz
Bad Neighbours is continuing to get great reviews on social media and could well turn into one of the comedy hits of the summer. Sabotage gets a very positive four star review in the new Total Film but I think it will struggle to avoid replicating its dismal US performance.
Across The Pond
Captain America: The Winter Soldier added $41.4m, which was enough for first place. The Marvel sequel has grossed $159m to date. Just behind in second was Rio 2 with $39m, which is almost the same as the first Rio's $39.2m debut in 2011. According to distributor 20th Century Fox, the audience was 57% female. Supernatural horror Oculus opened in third with $12m and the audience was 51% female and 52% under the age of 25. Baseball drama Draft Day opened in fourth place with $9.8m and Divergent completed the top five with $7.5m for a cume of $124.5m.
