Despite the continued warm weather, a strong film slate was enough to get people into the air conditioned comfort of the cinema this weekend, as Pixar’s latest offering debuted solidly and an all-action sci-fi extravaganza also proved a draw.
Monsters University opened with £3.5m, which is quiet by Pixar’s exalted standards but with the school holidays starting next week it should prove popular over the coming weeks. Over 34% of Monsters' box office was from 3D presentations, which is almost identical to Despicable Me 2.
Speaking of which, Despicable Me 2 fell one place to second with a solid hold of 44% and £2.2m. It now has a strong cume of £27.1m and will be expecting a good deal more with the school holidays about to kick off.
Giant robot vs giant monster epic, Pacific Rim, opened in third spot with £2.2m, which is the third highest opening for director Guillermo Del Toro, behind Blade 2 (£2.5m) and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (£3m).
Last week’s highest new entry, Now You See Me continued to perform strongly, falling a light 36% (once previews are removed) to £1.1m and a cume of £5.4m. The Internship completed the top 5 with £398k and cume of £2.3m.
On a quiet weekend for smaller new releases, Bollywood sports film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag squeezed into the top 10 with £89k and documentary We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks just made it into the top 15 with £19k.
Overall the box office was down 2% from last weekend and 43% from the same weekend last year.
In the US, Despicable Me 2 fell 46% to $44.8m but still held on to the top spot. After 12 days, the hugely popular animation has grossed $229.2m, and will pass the first movie's $251.5m total this week.
Grown Ups 2 opened in second with $42.5m, which is slightly better than the first Grown Ups, which debuted with $40.5m in 2010. Pacific Rim opened in third with $38.3m and the audience was 67% under the age of 35 and 61% male.
The Heat was in fourth with $14m and a cume of $112.4m, while The Lone Ranger completed the top five with $11.1m and a disappointing cume of $71.1m.
