UK Box office 15 - 17 March 2013

Oz: The Great And Powerful 3D had a solid hold at the top of the box office, easing just 30% to £2.6m and a cume of £7.7m. Alice In Wonderland also experienced a decline of 30% on its second weekend. A solid hold suggests strong word of mouth for Oz and bodes well for the coming weeks.

Side Effects was once again in second place, easing a very strong 16% with £759k for a cume of £2.3m. Over the next couple of days it will overtake the final total of Steven Soderbergh’s last thriller, Haywire, which finished on £2.34m. The highest new entry in third spot was stylish London-set thriller Welcome To The Punch with a well-known cast, including James McAvoy and Mark Strong, debuted at £460k.

The weekend’s biggest disappointment was Steve Carell and Jim Carrey comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Despite opening on over 380 screens, it couldn’t muster more than £306k, which makes it amongst the poorest performers for either star.

Overall the box office was down 30% from last weekend and 31% from the same weekend last year. One point of note, in preview on Friday and Saturday, animation The Croods grossed a strong £1.7m but this won’t feature on the top 15 until it goes on general release next weekend.

In the US, Oz continued its fantastic performance, adding a further $42.2m for a 10 day total of $145m.

Thriller, The Call took second place with an estimated $17.1m and the audience skewed female (61%) and 53% over the age of 30.

In third spot, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone disappointed with $10.3m and after a sorry second weekend last week, Jack the Giant Slayer eased 37% to $6.2m in its third weekend and now has a cume of $53.9m.

Identity Thief completed the top five with $4.5m and a cume of $123.7m. Perhaps the weekend’s most impressive performer was Spring Breakers which managed an impressive $270k and a $90k screen average.
