For the third weekend in a row the film at the top of the box office was not the best performer from Friday to Sunday. Thanks to two days of previews, Kick-Ass 2 snatched the top spot from Disney animation, Planes.

The comic book sequel grossed £2.5m, including £1m from previews, which is some way off the first Kick-Ass’ £3.8m debut, although that too was heavily preview assisted.

Planes landed in second spot grossing £1.7m over the weekend and although the obvious comparison is Cars, Planes was originally planned to go straight to DVD so it’s a strong performance for a much smaller film.

Another new entry, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg actioner, 2 Guns took third spot with £1.4m, including £43k from previews. It’s a solid start and almost slap bang in the middle of Wahlberg’s Contraband (£684k) and Washington’s Safe House (£2.1m).

Grown Ups 2 proved to be the strongest of last week’s new entries, falling just 32% once previews are removed to £1.1m and a cume of £4.8m. It has a good chance of matching the first film’s £7.8m final total.

Horror phenomenon, The Conjuring, completed the top five with a further £893k, taking its cume to £8.1m. Not many horror films cross the £10m mark but this looks all set to and a sequel, reportedly set in England, is in the works.

Of the rest of the top 15, the family films are still performing the strongest, with Monsters University safely recovered from its heat wave affected start to reach a healthy cume of £26.3m, and Despicable Me 2 having the strongest hold in this week’s chart, falling just 17% to 769k and a cume of £42.7m.

Overall the box office was down 15% from last weekend and 22% from the same weekend last year, although that figure is skewed from over £5.6m of previews for Brave, The Bourne Legacy and The Expendables 2. Remove those previews and this weekend is stronger.

In the US, The Butler opened to $25m, which is just below August 2011’s The Help ($26m). We're the Millers held on to second spot with $17.8m and now has a cume of $69.5.

Kick-Ass 2 opened in fourth with $13.6m, which is below the first film's $19.8m debut and the audience was 63% male and 58% under the age of 25.

The top five was completed by Planes, which fell 41% to $13.2m and after 10 days has grossed $45.1m.
