The Weekend Round-up
Over the long weekend The Amazing Spider-Man 2 climbed to the top of the box office with an impressive £10.8m, which includes Wednesday and Thursday previews of £2.9m. The Amazing Spider-Man opened with £11.1m in 2012 but that was from a Monday start, so included £4.3m of previews. In terms of Friday to Sunday, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was just behind its predecessor with £6.1m versus £6.8m, 53% of its box office was from 3D presentations.
Rio 2 took the second spot with £1.1m from Friday to Sunday and £1.6m including Monday. The Friday to Sunday figure is a strong hold, falling just 27% from last weekend and including Monday, the colourful animation has grossed £10.3m. It stands a good chance of beating the first Rio’s final total of £13.7m. Noah sailed into third, falling 42% to £921k from Friday to Monday and the religious epic now has a cume of £8.1m. Captain America: The Winter Soldier added £831k for a cume of £17m, which makes it the fourth highest grossing film of the year so far.
New entry The Love Punch completed the top five with £613k from Friday to Sunday and £786k including Monday. Tom Hardy vehicle, Locke opened in ninth with £251k, which includes £7k from previews. Including Monday, it has a cume of £311k. One other notable performer outside the top 15 was 12 Years a Slave, which finally crossed the £20m mark on Monday, a remarkable performance.
Overall the box office was up 61% from last weekend and a whopping 85% from the same weekend last year, which saw Olympus Has Fallen take the top spot.
Next Weekend
Sci Fi thriller Transcendence opens nationwide on Friday after previewing over the Easter weekend. Opening on Wednesday is comedy The Other Woman. At present there are no reviews online but this is the type of film that the inevitably disparaging reviews will struggle to damage. Australian drama, Tracks will be looking to make inroads with the art-house audience.
The Buzz
Preview footage of Godzilla was shown at WonderCon in Anaheim over the weekend and it has increased anticipation levels for an already hyped film to stratospheric levels. IGN described the footage as ‘nerdgasmic’. We only have to wait 23 days to find out if the film lives up to the hype.
Across The Pond
Captain America: The Winter Soldier topped the box office for the third straight weekend, adding $25.6m and it has now crossed the $200m mark. Religious drama Heaven is for Real opened with an impressive $22.5m to take second spot. Rio 2 took third place with $22.2m and after 10 days has grossed $75.1m. Transcendence opened in fourth with $10.9m. The movie's audience was 56% male and 56% over the age of 25. Comedy sequel A Haunted House 2 completed the top five with $8.8m.
