After another scorching week weather-wise, Monsters University remained number one at the box office, dropping a tiny 19% to £2.7m, taking the Pixar-helmed hit to a cume of £8.6m in its second week of release.
Not far behind this was The World’s End, which racked up an impressive debut of £2.1m. Messrs Pegg and Frost last collaborated on Paul back in 2011, which debuted with £3.1m. The World’s End may not have reached this giddying height on its opening weekend but expect steady growth for this movie over the coming weeks.
In third spot, Despicable Me 2 continued to perform well, dropping a miniscule 17%, with £1.8m for the weekend. This takes the cume for Despicable Me 2 to a very impressive £30.2m.
Giant Robot and Monster battle epic, Pacific Rim, continued to entertain audiences, with a second week box office of £1.3m, taking its cume to £5.1m.
Rounding out the top five was the magical Now You See Me, taking £922k in its third week of release. This brings its cume to an impressive £7.2m.
New entries in the top 15 included The Frozen Ground and Breathe In, taking £89k and £26k respectively.
In the US, horror thriller, The Conjuring scared up a mightily good $41m opening weekend, the audience was 53% female and 59% were over the age of 25.
Despicable Me 2 dropped a meaty 42%, garnering $25m at the box office. That was good enough to beat animation newcomer Turbo, which had a $21.5m opening this weekend past. This reinforces just how popular the Despicable brand is among family audiences. To date, Despicable Me 2 has earned $276.2 million, which makes it the eighth-highest-grossing animated movie ever, and the top one since Toy Story 3 in 2010.
Grown Ups 2 and RED 2 finish off the US top five, with $20m (down 51%) and $18.5m respectively.
