The Weekend Round-up

For the third week in succession, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 topped the box office, although Bad Neighbours would have kept it from the top spot had it not opened on Saturday (see the Next Weekend section below). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 added £2m to its cume over the weekend and with a further £687k on Monday has now grossed £20.5m. That makes it the third highest grossing film of the year so far behind The LEGO Movie and The Wolf of Wall Street, but it’s looking like it may fall just short of the first Amazing Spider-Man’s £26m final total.

The Other Woman held on to second, falling a light 27% to £1.4m from Friday to Sunday and including Monday has now grossed £5.7m. It’s obviously proving a strong alternative to the action spectacle that is filling many screens. Speaking of which, the highest new entry was Pompeii in third with £1.2m, which includes £290k from previews. Including Monday it has grossed £1.4m and an impressive 75.6% of its total is from 3D presentations.

Tarzan was another new entry in fourth with £808k, which included £280k from previews. Including Monday, it has grossed £1.1m to date. Rio 2 is continuing to charm families adding £461k over the weekend and another £280k on Monday. Including the bank holiday it has now grossed £12.7m. Three new entries landed in the lower reaches of the top 15 in Plastic, Brick Mansions and Blue Ruin. Including Monday they have grossed £177k, £167k and £134k respectively. Overall the box office was down 32% from last weekend and down 27% from the same weekend last year, which was the second weekend of Iron Man 3.

Next Weekend

Bad Neighbours opened on Saturday but its weekend total won’t be included until next week as it is classed as previews. It’s Saturday and Sunday total was £2.5m, which would have been enough to top the box office and is a strong start for the Zac Efron, Seth Rogen comedy. Including Monday it has grossed £3.5m, which bodes very well for its full run. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage opens on Wednesday. Also opening are Frank and The Wind Rises that will both be aiming for the art-house crowd.

The Buzz

Tom Cruise’s latest sci-fi vehicle Edge of Tomorrow opens on 30 May and the early rumblings online are positive. The first screenings of Godzilla took place last week and are still embargoed but apparently, the monster is used sparingly in the film, which suggests that the film focuses more on the human cost, which sounds like a good thing to me. Expect the initial responses to start filtering in over the next week.
