Man of Steel held off a strong challenge from World War Z this weekend, topping the box office with a further £5.1m, taking its cume to £21.3m. It has now flown past Superman Returns’ final tally of £16.4m and has the £25m mark in its sights.

Despite coming in second, zombie epic World War Z started with a sprint rather than a lurch and its total of £4.5m is the highest for a second placed film since Skyfall’s fourth weekend in November 2012 (£5.5m). It’s also the highest for a 15 certificate film since Ted’s £5.9m last August. Overall, 47.9% of World War Z’s total was from 3D presentations.

A long way back in third place was After Earth, falling a chunky 65% to £433k. The Smith family sci-fi now has a cume of £5.7m and would do well to reach £7m. Rounding out the top five and experiencing a relatively strong hold considering how the other holdovers fared was Behind The Candelabra. The Liberace biopic fell 41% to £368k and now has a cume of £2.4m.

There were a few new entries in the lower end of the top 10 with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson unable to cast his box office magic on Snitch. The crime drama looked to lack the excitement of a Fast & Furious or GI: Joe and could only open with £268k (including £2k from previews).

One point of note this weekend is the figure for Despicable Me 2, which previewed around the country on Saturday and Sunday. Its total of £4.8m will be added to its full opening weekend next week but bodes extremely well for its performance throughout the summer.

Overall the box office was up 64% from the same weekend last year and down 28% from last weekend, although neither figure takes into account the huge preview figure for Despicable Me 2.

In the US, Monsters University gave Pixar their 14th consecutive number one debut with $82m. It’s also their second highest opening ever behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3m). The movie's audience was 56% female and 60% were 25 years of age and under.
