UK Box Office – 22nd – 24th June

In an extremely close race for the top spot less than £90k separated the top four films but Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter just managed to come out in front. The historically inaccurate action horror opened with £1.1m but owes its number one spot to Wednesday and Thursday previews, which provided £375k of its total. The film feels similar in style and tone to the Underworld franchise and the most recent film in that series Underworld: Evolution also opened with £1.1m. A sizeable 81.2% of Abe Lincoln’s total was from 3D presentations.

For the third weekend in a row, Men In Black 3 secured second place holding off the challenge from The Five-Year Engagement by just £13k. The sci-fi comedy now has a cume of £19.1m and is the sixth highest grossing film of 2012. Also with £1.1m, The Five Year Engagement made a solid start. It is some way off the last Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller collaboration, Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s £2.1m opening, but a more apt comparison would be something like March’s Wanderlust, which opened with £491k.

The next new entry was low budget horror Chernobyl Diaries in seventh place with £495k. Although it’s not quite at the level of recent found footage hits the Paranormal Activity series and The Devil Inside, it’s a remarkably similar performance to another found footage horror, September 2011’s Apollo 18 (£490k).

Across the Atlantic,  Pixar had their 13th straight number one debut as Brave 3D opened with $66.7m.  Madagascar 3 made it a computer animated 1-2 easing 40.7% to $20.2m and now has a cume total of $157.6m. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opened in third with $16.5m and on its third weekend, Prometheus 3D crossed the $100m mark with a further $10m. The sci-fi thriller now has a cume total of $108.5m.  Rock Of Ages rounded out the top 5 falling 44.6% with $8m and the all-star musical now has a cume total of $28.8m. Aside from Brave 3D and Abe Lincoln, the only other new entry in the top 15 was the Steve Carell starring Seeking A Friend For the End Of The World. One final note, the very British The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel grossed a further $1.6m and now has a very impressive cume total of $38.4m.
