Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2: Revenge of the Leftovers, topped the UK Box Office this weekend past.
The Sony animation opened with a fantastic £3.6m. It’s some way off of the top performing animated film of this year to date (Despicable Me 2), but a strong start none the less.
Staying strong in the number two spot, for the second week running, is Captain Phillips. The Tom Hanks Oscar vehicle fell 30% to £2.4m, bringing its cume to £7.9m. It’s a fair bet that Captain Phillips will break the £10m barrier before it finishes its run in cinemas.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa debuted at number three this weekend past, taking £1.9m. This is an improvement on the previous offerings from the Jackass team. The first Jackass movie opened with £1.3m back in 2003 and Jackass Number 2 managed £735k in 2006.
The top five was rounded out by Turbo and Ender's Game, each taking £1.3m and £1.2m respectively. That constitutes a 66% decline for Turbo in its second week of release, bringing the cume for the turbo-charged snail racing romp to £6.2m.
Overall, the UK Box Office is up 15% from last weekend, but down 51% from the same weekend last year, when the box office behemoth that was Skyfall released.
Across the pond in the US, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa went two places better than its UK release, taking the number one slot and a cool $32m. The audience was 56% male and 63% over the age of 25.
Last week’s US number one, Gravity, slipped to second place, taking $20.3m. This represents a decrease of 32.4% and brings Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller to a stellar cume of $199.8m after just four weeks in cinemas.
Captain Phillips also slipped a place in the US chart to third spot, taking $11.8m in its third week of release. The cume now stands at $70m.
The Counsellor and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2: Revenge of The Leftovers completed the top five, taking $8m and $6.1m respectively.
