New entry Prisoners snatched the top spot from Rush over the weekend. The Hugh Jackman kidnapping drama opened with a solid £1.4m (including £38k from previews) and with strong reviews, including “chilling, thrilling and fulfilling” from DCM’s Exhibition Manager, Rebecca Rau, it should hold up well over the coming weeks.

Rush once again had a strong hold, falling just 26% to £988k and Ron Howard’s Formula 1 drama has now grossed £6.5m. It is certain to finish as September’s biggest film.

Blue Jasmine opened in third place with a hugely impressive £834k, including £41k from previews. That’s Woody Allen’s biggest ever opening, topping 2006’s Match Point, which debuted with £752k. It’s also over five times more than his last film, To Rome With Love opened with last year (£143k).

Another new entry in Runner Runner was just behind in fourth place with £765k. Considering the star power involved (Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake) and the fact it opened at 433 locations, that’s a disappointing performance for the glossy gambling thriller.

Two films crossed the £6m mark in fifth and sixth. Insidious 2 added £573k for a cume of £6m and About Time added a further £486k for a cume of £6.3m and has now passed the mark set by Richard Curtis’ last film, The Boat That Rocked (£6.3m). Diana shows no sign of picking up, plummeting 56% to 272k and a cume of £1.1m.

Finally, one other notable performer is debauched Irvine Welsh comedy, Filth in 12th place with £248k. Opening solely in Scotland it had the strongest location average of the week (£6,523) and bodes well for its nationwide expansion this Friday.

Overall the box office was up 2% from last weekend and down 11% from the same weekend last year when Looper and The Campaign went on general release.

In the US, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opened with $35m, which is an improvement over the first Cloudy film’s $30.3m opening in September 2009.
