The Weekend Round-up
Like Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier experienced a post-Avengers boost, opening with £6m, including £1.9m from previews. That’s considerably more than the £3.3m Captain America: The First Avenger opened with in July 2011. That film finished its run with £10.4m, so The Winter Soldier has already grossed over half that amount in just five days. With the Easter holidays starting next weekend there’s still plenty more to come from the Captain and 50% of its gross to date is from 3D presentations.
Second spot was taken by Muppets Most Wanted with £2.2m, including £1m from previews. The last Muppets film opened with £2.6m in 2012 but that was without previews. Last week’s number one performer, The Grand Budapest Hotel added another £870k in third and now has a cume of £8m.
Non-Stop landed in fourth, adding £360k and on its fifth week has grossed £8.7m. Need For Speed completed the top five adding £338k for a cume of £4.4m. One other notable new entry was The Legend of Hercules, which repeated its poor US performance with a debut of £190k. Overall the box office was up 64% from last weekend but down 13% from the same weekend last year.
Next Weekend
Next weekend there will be a three way battle for the top spot, with Rio 2, Divergent and Noah all set for release. Noah and Divergent will be looking to repeat their success in the US and Rio 2 will be hoping to perform better than it’s Saturday and Sunday preview figures this weekend suggest (£680k). Richard Ayoade’s follow-up to Submarine, The Double will be hoping to woo the art-house crowd.
The Buzz
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in cinemas in two weeks and if the half hour of footage I saw last Monday is anything to go by, it’s all set to top the first film’s £26m final total. It’s also still five weeks until Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage is released in UK cinemas but after it opened in the US this weekend with one of the star’s lowest ever openings ($5.3m), the prospects are not good.
Across The Pond
Noah sailed to the top of the box office with $44m and the audience was evenly split between men and women, and 74% over 25 years of age. Second place was taken by Divergent, which fell 52% to $26.5m. In third, Muppets Most Wanted had a decent hold falling 33% to $11.4m and now has a cume of $33.2m. Mr. Peabody & Sherman was in fourth with $9.5m and to date has earned $94.9m. God's Not Dead completed the top five with $9.1m and after 10 days has grossed $22m.
