The UK box office went loopy this weekend for an exciting original sci-fi title. Time travel mind-bender Looper came out on top with £2.4m, outperforming a number of well received recent sci-fi films including District 9 (£2.3m), The Adjustment Bureau (£1.4m) and Source Code (£1.3m). It’s also comfortably more than any other film where Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the lead, beating 2009’s (500) Days Of Summer (£1.2m).
Despite having a quiet Monday - Friday, ParaNorman 3D once again had a very strong weekend hold, easing just 11% to £1.1m for a cume of £4.3m. It didn’t open as well as Coraline but ParaNorman 3D appears to have more staying power, with Coraline only grossing £458k on its third weekend. The fifth entry in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution 3D with £792k. The previous Resident Evil film, Resident Evil: Afterlife opened with £1.7m in 2010.
There was another new entry in fourth spot with American political satire The Campaign opening with £772k. That’s right between Anchorman (£556k) and Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (£1m). The only other new entry in the Top 15 was Bollywood comedy OMG – Oh My God! In 14th spot with £141k. One other notable occurrence was Pixar’s Brave 3D making its ninth consecutive appearance in the top 10 and crossing the £21m mark. It has now reached £21.2m and has passed Tangled’s £20.5m final total. Overall the box office was up 15% from last weekend, and 39% from the same weekend last year.
In the US, Hotel Transylvania 3D opened in the top spot and set a new September opening record at the same time with $42.5m. It’s a great result for Adam Sandler, whose last two films (Jack And Jill, That’s My Boy) were considered something of a failure. Looper opened in second place with $21.2m. As you’d expect, the audience was more male (59%). It's also worth noting that Looper is expected to earn between $23m and $25m this weekend in China, making it the first international movie to open higher in China than anywhere else in the world (with the exception of Titanic 3D). Powerful police drama End of Watch eased 39% to $7.8m this weekend for a cume of $26m. Trouble with the Curve also had a decent hold, easing 38% to $7.3m and a cume of $23.5m. Finally, House at the End of The Street completed the top five with $7.1m and a cume of $22.2m.
