You may have noticed the bright yellow ball in the sky that made the UK very warm this weekend.
The fantastic weather didn't hinder Despicable Me 2, which held on to the top spot with another £4m taking its cume to £22.9m. That takes it well clear of the first Despicable Me’s final £20.2m total and with the school holidays on the horizon, there’s plenty more to come.
All-star magician caper Now You See Me was by far the most successful of the new entries, opening in second place with £2.9m (including £1.1m from previews). Films featuring magicians have historically not performed well, with 2006’s The Prestige the most notable, opening with £1.2m on the way to a final total of £3.6m. Now You See Me will have no problem surpassing that total and will be looking to potentially double it.
The Internship came in third with £1.2m (including £430k from previews). The obvious comparison is The Wedding Crashers but unfortunately The Internship couldn’t come close to matching that film’s £2.2m opening.
In fourth and fifth, World War Z and Man Of Steel, fell 65% and 67% to £837k and £803k respectively. World War Z now has a strong cume of £12.2m, which seemed highly unlikely just a few months ago. Man Of Steel is now on £28.4m and with Pacific Rim landing this Friday is unlikely to get much past £30m.
In seventh spot was The Bling Ring with £141k (including £7.6k from previews). It couldn’t replicate Emma Watson’s last foray into independent film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which opened with £828k last October. Overall the box office was down 52% from the barnstorming last weekend and down 26% from the same weekend last year. With Monsters University and Pacific Rim opening on Friday, expect an upturn in fortunes.
On the 4th July weekend in the US, Despicable Me 2 opened with a huge five day total of $142.1m. For the Friday to Sunday period its total of $82.5m is on a par with Monsters University's debut a few weeks ago and far superior to Despicable Me’s $56.4m opening in 2010. The movie's audience was 60% female and 55% under the age of 25.
In second place, The Lone Ranger grossed a disappointing $48.9m in its first five days and its audience was 68% over the age of 25 and 57% male.
In third spot, The Heat continued to perform strongly falling 36% to £25m. It now has a cume of $160m. In fourth place, Monsters University fell 57% to $19.6m and has so far grossed $216.1m. World War Z rounded out the top five with $18.2m and a very healthy cume of $158.7m.
