Like a festive Avengers, Rise Of The Guardians 3D ascended to the top of the box office this weekend easing 19% to £1.6m. Wit a cume of £4.1m, showing that it is well on its way to becoming a family favourite. Last December, Puss In Boots opened with £2m, almost exactly the same as Rise Of The Guardians last weekend, and went on to gross £1.3m on its second weekend on its way to a final total of £15.6m. It’s not unreasonable to assume a similar level of performance for ROTG.

Skyfall dropped back to second spot with a further £1.4m, taking its tally to a record breaking £96.3m, smashing the previous record set by Avatar in 2009. It has not just been a success in the UK, it has grossed over $918m worldwide and may well break the $1bn barrier, which is an amazing achievement in itself but even more impressive when you consider that the last and previously highest grossing Bond film, Quantum Of Solace achieved $586m worldwide.

The highest new entry was Seven Psychopaths in third spot with £1.1m, including £302k from previews. This is a good deal more than Colin Farrell and director Martin McDonagh’s previous collaboration, In Bruges (£344k).

Breaking Dawn Pt 2 and Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger! rounded out the top five with the former delivering a further £978k, increasing its series best performance to £33.4m and the latter closing in on £966k with a cume of £4.4m. Apart from Seven Psychopaths, the only other new entries were Bollywood title, Khiladi 786 in 12th with £104k, and Miley Cyrus caper, So Undercover, in 14th spot with £99k.

In the US, Skyfall returned to the top of the box office after falling just 34% to $11m, bringing its cume to an amazing $261.6m. It has so far grossed almost $100m more than Quantum Of Solace ($168.4m) and is about to pass The Amazing Spider-Man ($262m) to become Sony's highest-grossing film in over five years. It's also the first film to reach number one in its fifth weekend since How to Train Your Dragon.

In second place, Rise of the Guardians fell a light 21% to $10.5m and now has a cume of $61.9m. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 was in third spot with $9.2m and a cume of $268.7m. Lincoln had another strong weekend, easing just 32% to $9.1m and has a cume of $97.3m. The top five was once again completed by Life of Pi which ended up with $8.3m and a $60.9m total.
