Gravity 3D's arrival has been long awaited and arguably, the event film of the year didn’t disappoint.
Alfonso Cuaron’s space thriller Gravity 3D opened with £6.2m, which included £619k from Thursday previews. The Friday to Sunday total of £5.6m is the seventh highest of the year, knocking last weekend’s big opening Thor: The Dark World into eighth.
It is unusual for a wholly original sci-fi title to open so strongly and the last one to do so was Inception with £5.9m in 2010. Gravity has also revitalised the interest in 3D with a huge 89.5% of its box office taken from 3D presentations. The last big film that demanded to be seen in 3D was Life of Pi and that made 80.3% of its gross from 3D.
Gravity was the only major new release this weekend, so Thor: The Dark World dropped to second, falling 47% (once previews are removed) to £3m and a cume of £14m. By the end of Monday it will have overtaken the first Thor’s £14m final total.
Judi Dench drama, Philomena, had a terrific hold in third, falling a tiny 3% (once previews are removed) to £1.4m and a cume of £4.8m. With holds like that there’s still plenty to come for the Steve Coogan penned charmer.
Captain Phillips fell one place to fourth with £1.1m, taking the Hanks thriller to £13.3m and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 completed the top five with £946k for a cume of £10.1m. It was always going to be a close run to see which of the autumn animations would come out on top, but it’s now likely that Cloudy 2 will overtake Turbo in the next couple of weeks to take the crown.
Overall the box office was down 19% from last weekend and down 5% from the same weekend last year when Argo was released and Bond was still packing them in with Skyfall.
Across the Atlantic, Thor: The Dark World debuted with $86.1m, which is up 31% from the first Thor's $65.7m. The audience was 62% male and 61% over the age of 25.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa fell 44% to $11.3m, and the Johnny Knoxville comedy has now grossed $78.7m.
Free Birds came in third, falling just 29% to $11.2m and after 10 days has grossed $30.2m. Last Vegas also had a strong hold, falling 32% to $11.1m and a cume of $33.5m.
Ender’s Game completed the top five with $10.3m and after 10 days has grossed $44m. Quietly going about its business in seventh, 12 Years a Slave expanded to 1,144 locations and grossed a further $6.6m taking its cume to $17.3m. It will expand further next weekend.
