The Weekend Round-up

Bad Neighbours is laying down a serious marker for all other big comedies this year with a huge £8.4m debut. Thanks to its unusual Saturday opening, that figure includes £5.2m of previews but it’s still a hugely impressive performance. Its Friday to Sunday total of £3.3m is the highest debut for a live-action Seth Rogen film, beating 2011’s Paul (£3.2m) and it’s also the fifth highest Friday to Sunday opening weekend this year. The tonally similar 21 Jump Street opened with £1.6m in March 2012.

After three weeks at the top, The Amazing Spider-Man dropped to second, falling 35% to £1.3m. The Marvel web-slinger now has a cume of £22.3m and will shortly overtake The Wolf of Wall Street to become the second highest grossing film this year. The Other Woman came in third with £929k for a cume of £7.1m and it’s well on course to overtake Bad Teacher’s final total of £7.8m.

Rio 2 continued to perform well in fourth, actually increasing on last weekend by 20% with £552k. It now has a cume of £13.3m and is well placed to beat the first Rio’s final total of £13.7m. Pompeii completed the top five with £505k, taking its cume to £2.2m. Two new entries landed in the lower reaches of the top 15, with Michael Fassbender’s Frank opening with £203k (including £2k from previews) and Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, The Wind Rises opening with £200k (including £11k from previews). The Wind Rises actually had the second highest location average of the weekend, behind Bad Neighbours, with £3.4k.

Overall the box office was up 80% from last weekend and down 4% from the same weekend last year, although the figures for this weekend are boosted hugely by Bad Neighbours’ previews.

Next Weekend

Godzilla opens on Thursday and having seen it I can say that British director Gareth Edwards has done a wonderful job in creating a detailed and awe-inspiring monster movie. Also out is Patricia Highsmith adaptation, The Two Faces of January, which has been receiving strong reviews and Elizabeth Olsen’s second film of the weekend, period drama In Secret (she also appears in Godzilla).
