Winners of the 2025 Academy Awards

The 97th Academy Awards Ceremony took place last night (Sunday 2 March) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The big winner of the night was Anora, which took home five awards, including Best Picture. Mikey Madison received the Oscar for Best Actress, and Sean Baker received Oscars for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay. The film also won Best Film Editing.

During his acceptance speech for Best Directing, Sean Baker highlighted the importance of the cinema experience: “Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theatre. Watching a film in the theatre, with an audience is an experience… It’s a communal experience you simply don’t get at home.”

He also called on distributors to put a greater focus on the theatrical releases of films, and for audiences to support independent films and independent cinema.

Brady Corbet’s historical drama The Brutalist received three awards. Adrien Brody was presented with the Oscar for Best Actor, and the film also received Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

Emilia Pérez received two awards, Best Original Song for El Mal, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña. Kieran Culkin received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain.

Despite receiving 10 nominations, fan favourite Wicked only received two awards, for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. However, with Wicked: For Good set to release in November this year, there’s still a chance for more awards next year.

Dune: Part II won the Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, and Conclave received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Brazilian film I'm Still Here won Best International Feature, and The Substance received the Oscar for Best Make-up and Hairstyling.

The Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to Flow, and Best Animated Short to In the Shadow of the Cypress. I'm Not a Robot won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short.

No Other Land won Best Documentary Feature, and The Only Girl in the Orchestra won Best Documentary Short.
