Box Office Round-up
Last weekend, A Minecraft Movie posted the biggest opening weekend since July 2023, and this weekend it followed it up with the biggest second weekend of the year, adding a chunky £7.2m, down 52% from last weekend. That takes its total after 10 days in cinemas to a terrific £31.1m, and it’s already the second biggest film of 2025, behind Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. On its second weekend two years ago, The Super Mario Bros. Movie added £7.6m, so it was holding up slightly better than A Minecraft Movie. But with the school holidays continuing this week and the Easter weekend next weekend, it should add a decent amount over the next week too.
Rami Malek hadn’t taken a starring role since his Oscar-winning turn in Bohemian Rhapsody, until he took the lead in The Amateur, which opened in second this weekend with £1.1m. This is an original thriller from director James Hawes (One Life, TV’s Slow Horses) and it opened ahead of another recent original thriller, Black Bag, which opened with £915k. Black Bag is on its way out of cinemas and has so far grossed £3.7m, so The Amateur has to be looking at a total north of that.
The third biggest title of the weekend is a major event cinema success. Six The Musical was in cinemas last weekend, it had an encore on Tuesday and is back in cinemas this weekend. It added £915k for a new total of £3.9m. It’s now the biggest event cinema title of 2025, having overtaken Macbeth: David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, which has grossed £2.3m.
Event cinema came in fourth too as Andre Rieu’s 75th Birthday Celebration: The Dream Continues opened in fourth with £597k. This was only in cinemas on Saturday and Sunday.
Rounding out the top five is Snow White, which added £411k, a drop of 39% from last weekend. That takes its total after four weekends in cinemas to £9.1m and it’s now the seventh biggest film released so far in 2025.
Outside of the top five, Blumhouse thriller Drop opened in sixth with £383k. Faith-based television show preview The Chosen: The Last Supper – Episodes 1 and 2 opened in seventh with £257k, and South Asian film Good Bad Ugly opened in eight with £253k (which includes £93k from previews).
Next Weekend
Sinners is a new thriller from Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) and star Michael B. Jordan. Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (both B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
The Penguin Lessons is a comedy-drama starring Steve Coogan. Coogan plays a disillusioned Englishman who goes to work in a school in a divided Argentina in 1976, and finds his life transformed when he rescues an orphaned penguin from the beach. It’s in cinemas from Wednesday.
Warfare is a drama about a platoon of Navy SEALs who embark on a dangerous mission in Ramadi, Iraq, with the chaos and brotherhood of war retold through their memories of the event. It’s directed by Alex Garland (Civil War) and Ray Mendoza.
Freaky Tales is four interconnected stories set in 1987 Oakland, California and will tell about the love of music, movies, people, places and memories beyond our knowable universe. Pedro Pascal stars.
Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is a new anime. A group of Defense Force volunteers come together to try to defeat an army of ruthless Kaiju.
The Buzz
The Smashing Machine sees Dwayne Johnson take on a rare serious role as former mixed-martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr, and hits cinemas on 4 October. Benny Safdie, who previously made Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler, directs, and it should be one of the stand-out films of Q4. Emily Blunt co-stars, re-uniting with Johnson after Jungle Cruise. Benny Safdie directed Uncut Gems alongside his brother, Josh Safdie, but they have gone their separate ways for a short while, as Benny directs The Smashing Machine, and Josh Safdie directs Marty Supreme, which hits cinemas on Boxing Day. Marty Supreme is a comedy-drama set around the world of table-tennis. It stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Tyler The Creator, and both this and The Smashing Machine are A24 films.
Across The Pond
A Minecraft Movie held on to the top spot, posting a huge $80.6m second weekend, taking its total after two weekends in cinemas to $281m. Religious animation The King Of Kings opened in second with an impressive $19.1m. The Amateur saw more success across the pond than in the UK, opening with $15m. Warfare opened in fourth with $8.3m, and Drop opened in fifth with $7.5m.
