Nominations Announced for BIFA 2024

The nominations for the 2024 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) were announced this morning by previous BIFA winners Vivian Oparah and Mia McKenna-Bruce, highlighting this year’s phenomenal talent within the British film industry.

Out of the over 40 films nominated, Rich Peppiatt’s comedy biopic Kneecap leads the nominations with 14 nominations. The biopic depicts the formation and rise of Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap, with the bandmembers playing themselves.

The film received nominations for many of the major awards including:

  • Best British Independent Film
  • Best Screenplay Sponsored by Apple Original Films, Rich Peppiatt
  • Best Director Sponsored by Sky Cinema, Rich Peppiatt
  • Best Joint Lead Performance, Naoise Ó Cairealláin/ Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh/ JJ Ó Dochartaigh

Additionally, Rose Glass’ crime thriller Love Lies Bleeding, follows closely with 12 nominations, including:

  • Best British Independent Film
  • Best Director Sponsored by Sky Cinema, Rose Glass
  • Best Joint Lead Performance, Kristen Stewart/ Katy O’Brian

The films nominated for the Best British Independent Film alongside Kneecap and Love Lies Bleeding are Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun which is the third most nominated film (9 nominations), Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (7 nominations) and Sandhya Suri's Santosh (4 nominations).

The winners will be announced at the BIFA ceremony on Sunday 8th December.
