The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced yesterday, being a prestigious recognition of this year's greatest feats in film. The 97th Academy Award nominations will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and take place on the 2nd March.
Leading the nominations is Jacques Audiard's musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film makes history by being the most nominated non-English language film in Oscar history and only one nomination short of tying for most nominated film in Oscar history.
Following closely is Brady Corbet's period drama The Brutalist with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and supporting roles for Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. The Brutalist is released in UK cinemas today. Additionally, Jon M. Chu's musical blockbuster Wicked received 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande. Wicked was a huge cultural moment, almost surpassing £60m at the box office.
The final films making up the top 5 most nominated of 2025 are A Complete Unknown and Conclave, which were both nominated for 8 awards. James Mangold's musical biopic A Complete Unknown received a variety of awards, with Timothée Chalamet's Best Actor nomination making him the youngest two-time nominee since James Dean. Edward Berger's Papal thriller Conclave, was the most nominated film at the 2025 BAFTA awards and remains a top contender to sweep this award season, received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, already surpassing £7m at the box office.
